Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum

California State University, Long Beach

A longtime goal of the California State University, Long Beach campus was the renovation and expansion of the University of Art Museum as it was formerly known. Rechristened the Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum, it is now an impressive structure featuring a diamond-offset glass vestibule entrance designed by the architectural firm Pfeiffer Partners, Los Angeles. The new museum includes outdoor gardens with seating areas, a state-of-the-art education laboratory, a reading and archives room, temperature-controlled artwork storage, office space, a visitor’s lobby, a reception area, and a retail shop.

The Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum opened to the public in February 2022. At 11,000 square feet, the newly redesigned complex offers new attractions and features, including several new galleries and public spaces. The Museum can better serve visitors and is the only free museum in Long Beach. Visitors of all ages can experience free programs in exhibition spaces, an Education Laboratory, native and water-wise plant gardens, a refreshed Patron’s Plaza, and a broadened public art park and landscape with even more sculptural works.
The new museum will offer research and learning opportunities for students and visitors alike and will have something for everyone to enjoy.

CURRENT EXHIBITION

Carolyn Mary Kleefeld – Cosmic Connections

Uncorrupted Mystery, 1990. mixed media on canvas.40 x 72 in.

Cosmic Connections Exhibition

Through December 15, 2024, in the Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Gallery

We are happy to announce Carolyn’s third exhibition at the Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum, Cosmic Connections, which is drawn from their collection of her works. This exhibition includes several of the artist’s large abstract paintings, taken from multiple series, and related drawings made in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

As Carolyn increasingly identified as a poet and visual artist, she began to create abstract, gestural works referencing the landscape and the cosmos. Two bodies of work, Cosmic Connections and Landscape Abstractions, reflect her deepening understanding of the position within what she calls “the flow.” Recognizing herself as a creative being within a larger natural universe, Carolyn’s work from this period expresses her continuing exploration of spiritual movements and consciousness-expansive practices. Including the most representative works from this period in her oeuvre, Cosmic Connections will remain on view through 2024.

The Carolyn Kleefeld Endowment proudly provides continuing funding for several of the exhibitions at the Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum.
